Single Girl’s Guide to First Phone Call Date – Matrimonial Sites /Arrange Marriage/Internet Dating

I have been talking with a couple of guys selected from Jeevansathi/Shaadi or selected by my parents. During my phone calls which usually happen, before I have met the guy I realized that the first phone call can be tough. Its awkward speaking to someone whose biodata is the only thing you have seen. So, here is my list of tips for that first call to know the person & retain the interest (try it if you want but remember I’m still single)

1> Ask open ended questions – guys love to feel important, by showing questioning him & listening to what’s important to him you are engaging him.

2> Normally any guy who is calling you will want to make a good impression. He will try hard to carry on witty, fun, and pleasant conversations and use it to discover your interests and feelings –laugh at his jokes, have some of your own to share.

3> Don’t talk about breakups/past relations etc in the first phone call. Any unpleasant stuff you may be asked, should be answered wrapped in layers of humour

4> When you speak , speak with energy, and enthusiasm (don’t explode with enthusiasm or giggle like a crazy)

5> Don’t go on and on about a subject. If asked a question, give some information, and then smoothly point the conversation back to him

6> Disconnect the call on a high to make it memorable for him

Things you can talk about

1> Hobbies – Any shared interests will give you ideas for your actual date and an insight of the person he is

2> Growing-up years including education

3> General items in news that you can talk about

4> Likes & dislikes / habits – how do you match up, you may discover things that are a strict no to you ( chain smoking, eating habits etc)

5> Family – If you people end up getting married, they will play a huge role. His relations with his family will tell you what you may be getting into

6> Career plan – To give you an idea of his ambitions and all

Wish you all the best for your first phone call.

Finding an apartment on rent : Single girl's checklist

I have been living alone in Pune, for about 3 years now…Decided to look for a new flat to rent as lease was about to expire, was facing some problems with landlord and wanted to move to a place, where I will have some kind of social life.

Shortlisted Aundh as the final location, but finding a nice apartment to my liking and in my budget was a tough job.

Started with looking at 1 bedroom flat and finally zeroed in on a 2 bhk apartment. During this month long house hunt learnt that any single girl living alone should check the following things before finalizing the apartment.

1> General safety of location

2>Availability of parking space if you drive or distance from the bus stop / auto stand.

3> Frequency of public transport

4> Approach to your flat – is it well lighted & safe

5> Is there enough public around & is the area well lit during your normal commute timings

6> Actual commute timing ( it may be close, but due to traffic conditions , may take a longer time , so check it out before finalizing)

7> Never take a flat on ground floor – its easiest to break into

8> If possible opt for a flat in a society, with security guards. If not possible check with neighbours on security

9> Distance from nearest grocery store - you are bound to forget a few items, you wantesd to buy & a nearby grocery store will come in handy for those urgent purchases.

10> Type of landlord/society rules - you may want to bring over friends/your sister may want to come & stay/ your boy-friend may want to come over - check it out in advance how these may be viewed by your landlord/society & how strict they are about implementing those rules or you may find yourself searching for a new house.

Other things you may want to consider are nearness to gym/beauty parlour/home-delivery/mess/doctor/chemist etc.

Have fun, house hunting.

Single Womans Guide to Living Alone

GOING SOLO

There was a time – not a very long time ago, that young women would leave their parents home to build a home & life with their husband.
But now education & career are taking women away to different cities, states and countries – where they are totally alone (& independent) maybe for the first time ever.
If you are such a young lady going solo for the time – take care of the following points & have a great time, being your boss & living the life you deserve.

Choosing an Apartment
1> Security: Make sure that the area is safe (check with your new colleagues), apartment block is secure, has guards on duty (who actually o the job), check with current residents if they feel safe (in general you will too), check if approach road is well lit and has people moving around at the time you will be going out and coming back from office. A safe apartment may cost more, but is an essential not to be compromised on.
2> Budget : Decide on a budget and be clear about money you can afford to and want to spend on rent, based on these you'll need to find out what types of apartments are available in your price range. You may even want to share your place, so you can afford a bigger / safer apartment, or one that is in a more desirable neighborhood.

Household Chores
1> Food : Living alone, food is going to be a major problem even if you know cooking – simple reason you won’t feel like cooking for yourself, after a long tiring day in office. If possible invest in a basic microwave & freezer (you can cook your meals on weekends & freeze the stuff), you can also get dabbas or join a mess. If no such option exists ask your neighbor (aunty) if she can give you dinner on payment basis.
2> Maid : Hire a maid , your house will be clean & clutter free -believe me despite your best promises , you won’t be cleaning your house  as often as you would like & washing dishes & clothes will make you feel burdened and lonely.
3> Shopping: Find the nearest discount shopping store (a D-Mart may come out to be cheaper than Big Bazaar for you) do all your shopping in bulk – this will get you better discounts. For small stuff your neighborhood kirana shop is a good bet.

Beating the Loneliness

Work hard at making new friends, with your new colleagues. Gym can be a great place to start new friendships & to keep you looking great. Join a hobby club or take up some extra classes (you will have fun doing something you wanted to learn & make friends).

Easy Basics using Microwave

Get more juice from citrus fruitGently warm a lemon, lime, or orange before squeezing by hand or using a juicer – Heat on full power for about 10 seconds.
Peel peaches or tomatoesPour water into a deep microwavable bowl or a glass measuring cup. Bring to a boil. Drop tomatoes or peaches in the water for only a few seconds each. The skin will loosen and peel off easily.
Dry fresh herbsLay a small bunch of fresh herbs between paper towels . Microwave on full power for 1 to 2 minutes. Let cool, then check to see if they are dry enough to crumble. If not, continue to microwave, 30 seconds at a time, until the herbs are completely dried. Store in an airtight container.
Peel onions Place onions on a covered microwave-safe plate and cook for 1 to 2 minutes at full power.
Remove outer skin from garlic clovesPut the cloves in a custard cup and microwave at 80% power for 30 seconds. Allow the cloves to cool enough so you can handle them, then lift away the skin.
Blanch fresh vegetablesPrepare the vegetables as desired – wash, chop, peel, slice, etc. – then place in a microwave-safe bowl. Add a small amount of water, cover, and microwave on full power for 3 to 4 minutes per pound, stopping to stir and re-arrange halfway through. Drain, then immediately plunge the hot vegetables into ice cold water to quickly cool.
Melt butter, margarine or solid Ghee…Microwave 1 stick / spoon of butter or margarine or 1/2 cup of ghee on full power for 45 seconds to 1 minute .
Freshen chips, biscuits and snack crackers…Microwave, uncovered, for about one minute on full power.
Add Moisture
Fruits – Sprinkle a little fruit juice or water over dried fruits, cover with plastic wrap and microwave 1/2 to 1 minute at High to moisten and plump them.
Tortillas/Crepes/Cakes/Rotis – Wrap tortillas or crepes in damp towel and microwave at High 1/2 minute or more to soften them.
Reheating dried leftovers - Add Water or sauce when reheating dry leftovers. A tablespoon of water or sauce is sufficient, and will not change the flavor of food or cause overcooking. Moisture creates steam for even reheating.
